Common Fish Diseases

Fungus or Cotton Wool

Symptoms usually appear on damaged tissue in the form of white or cream coloured fuffy patches

Slime Disease

Symptoms consist of excessive mucus production (slimey skin), blue-white discolouration of the skin, awkward swimming movements & scratching

Velvet Disease

A fine "dusting" of tiny whitist or rust coloured spots over the body & fins. Fish can also show gasping, scratching & inflamed tissue

Gill Fluke Infection

Caused by parasitic worms, resulting in inflamed gills, excessive breathing & scratching of the gill covers

White Spot or Ich

This disease is caused by a protozoan which causes small white spots on the body & fins of the affected fish, causing irritation & repeated scratching against the gravel, rock or other aquarium decor.

Skin Fluke Infection

Worms produce inflamed patches on the skin with excessive mucus, some loss of body colour & scratching against objects

Anchor Worm

Symptoms nervous, jumping swimming, scratching and loss of colour. Slim whitish parasties should be clearly visable

Other bacterial infections:

Ulcers, dropsy (swollen body with "pine cone" apperance.
