Jan & Feb Usually the first two months of the year are the quietest as the fish are normally living in the bottom of the pond. Whilst the water temperature is below 6 degrees C (43F) the fish will not be feeding & burning off any excess fat during the winter months. A pond heater (or other means of keeping the water surface free from ice. This prevents ice forming and allows dangerous gases from being trapped under the surface. March If your pump & filter have been switched off during the winter now as is gets warmer to switch them both back on. The addition of a filter treatment may help the filter mature quicker. Replace the UV lamp (if fitted) before switching this on. Fish can now be fed sparingly with a food designed for lower temperatures. Keep an eye out for parasites & diseases which may come to life after being dormant overthe winter. April As the temperatures continue to rise, fish now should be feeding reguarly, but still continue to feed the low temperature food sparingly. Overfeeding can put excesive strain on the filter, resulting in poor water quality & poor fish health. Regular testing of the water for Ammonia & Nitrite should ensure that the water quality is at the optimum conditions. May May is normally the earliest time that new fish can be introduced to the pond. New fish should be watched carefully after introduction for signs of disease or poor water quality. Take care when feeding & remove any uneaten food to prevent water pollution. June Feeding of the low temperature food can now be replaced with a higher protein food or one with colour enhancers. June is also a good time to give the plants in the food a feed. July/August If your pond does not have a fountain or waterfall, it may be necessary to introduce a pond pump to increase oxygen levels in the water. Hot weather can also reduce water levels by 50mm (2") a week, and this should be topped up when required - Don't forget to use a dechlorinator. If you are going out holiday don't forget to ask a neighbour or friend to look after the feeding or use a hloiday block. September - December Feeding should be changed to a low temperature food whilst the temperature is above 6 degrees C (43F). Remove any dead leaves from pond plants & cover the pond with a net to prevent leaves from nearby trees entering the pond. Idealy the pond & filter should continue to be run over the winter. Don't forget to use a heater to keep the pond ice free.
