| Britains Aquatic Superstore Ltd 225, Folds Rd Bolton Lancashire BL1 2TW Tel: 01204 534343 Dear readers, PLEASE DO NOT SHOP HERE, If I could give a rating of minus I would, One star is too good, How on earth this place can still be allowed to trade is beyond me, HERES WHY, As soon as you walk in the shop you are greeted by the overwhelming smell of animal feces, this is particularly strong and on a dry goods aisle that contain broken fish ornaments, open boxes with parts missing from the contents that presumably have been stolen and the whole display looks like it was recently victim to the riots and looting, I saw Rat Poisoning on the floor under a shelving unit, this is an obvious problem they have due only to the fact that none of the staff seem to know how to use a brush or hoover as the ammount of bird seed on the floor in the room at the far end must be a feast for vermin. Most of the larger birds and parrots seemed to be in some distress, screaming, plucking, shaking, some of the vivs contained dry feces that had been there for days, the water dishes contained bits of bedding and old sheaded skin and who knows what else, One solitary meerkat paced continually back and forth presumably looking for its PACK, as if this wasnt enogh to put me off for life and let readers know, the fish department was no better, Dead fish on the floor, in the tanks, stuck to filters, I decided not to bother with the Cafe as the general state of the whole shop was appauling and put me off, the toilets were filthy and smelly in both the male and females, So then for a personal test I asked 2 members of staff if the birds (cockatiels) were male or female and none of them could say for sure, A junior school child could probably tell you this, why do people who obviously know nothing about animals work in a so called pet store, If you do happen to visit this place, look at the yellow crowned amazon (BARNEY)in front of the till next to the small senegal and see if the water bowl still contains what can only be described as lumpy brown soup, I mentioned this to another member of staff who after chatting on her fone in a personal call told me it wasnt her job to feed the animals, RIDICULOS !!!, When asked anything basic about any animals the staff seemed to be on another planet, This visit was all filmed and a copy sent to Bolton council, RSPCA, and Enviromental Health, Please do not support this kind of treatment of animals by spending your money there and if you feel the need to check out if my comments are justified please comment on this page after your visit, Thanks for reading... SECRET FILMER August 31st 2011 Report this review Rating:1 DISGUSTING, PLEASE DO NOT SHOP HERE !! Dave August 31st 2011 Report this review Rating:1 As nearly every else said this place is absolutely diabolical!!! I counted 8 dead fish in one 60 litre tank 3 floating on the surface 1 on the floor and 4 stuck in the filter inlet! Numerous dead fish in other tanks too. A dark dingy hell hole!! superdream July 31st 2011 Report this review Rating:1 The store has a lone Meerkat. It is a well known fact Meerkats are very sociable animals that live in mobs of 20-30 members. This lone kat paces up and down his enclosure and is clearly in psychological distress. Having walked around the fish enclosure's their were very poorly and more than likely dying Koi. There where small dead fish floating in the majority of the cages. Moving on to the bird section there were parrots that have been plucking themseleves bald with stress. Notably the area the store is based in is rather challenged and the store consists of frequent loud and noisy visiting children that bang on closures and rattle cages to which the Aviary has a constant stream of noise pollution all day everyday during summer holidays. This is noise torture and sleep deprivation. I was appalled at the state of the place, dirty and smelly ...not to mention the state of animals and birds! The budgies looked terrible, and the vast majority of the other animals we saw did not look happy and healthy as you'd expect. Upon asking three members of staff (all looked in their teens) none of them could tell us how old the birds were, and said they had no idea how to tell males and females apart - they were utterly clueless about everything. All they could say was their boss was on holiday so they couldn't ask ...the point is they should know this stuff if they work there!! We have always had budgies and decided upon buying a cockatiel instead this time - we chose one that looked healthier than the others but alas when we took him to the vets, she told us that he was quite underweight and malnourished. I have contacted the RSCPA to report them as I cannot believe that the store is operating in this way, getting away with treating animals so cruelly and PROFITING from it. I am glad to have rescued one poor soul from that godforsaken place and just hope that he pulls through. If you have been to Dave's aquarium and have witnessed the appalling state of the animals/fish/birds please please please report them to the RSPCA and Bolton council. I hope we can make a difference (as corny as that sounds!) mialee843 April 24th 2011 Report this review Rating:1 DO NOT USE THIS SHOP!! L Irwin January 21st 2010 Report this review Rating:1 BAS SHOP TURNS THE LIGHTS BACK ON! Locals will know that BAS went into administation, and not surprising with all the poor reviews. HOWEVER It has recently been taken over and things are looking promising. The small cafe has expanded and now offers a childrens play area complete with slides and ball pool and there is also a pottery area to keep children entertained. The food isn't bad either. The tanks themselves are well stocked with plenty of variation at fair prices. All the fish appeared healthy and had little captions below each tank explaining about the fish. Staff were very helpful and easy to find. The cichlid area is amazing. BAS is mainly tropical livestock but their is still a good selection of marine fish. Coldwater fish remain at the far end of the store and hasn't changed much. fish look healthy though. rabbits, guinea pigs etc are clean, and not crowded and appear comfortable. tank setups and equipment seem competative in price. Very satisfied with what I saw and really hope they can keep it up. Give it a chance people! Warren Benton November 25th 2009 Report this review Rating:10 I used to supply Daves aquarium with daphnea many years ago when he was in the old church and I too followed to the new BAS but on a recent visit back to manchester I went to bolton to visit BAS and after an hour I left went outside and called the RSPCA to report them I suggest everyone else does the same when a shop is clearly causing distress to fish or animals. Paul September 4th 2009 Report this review Rating:1 I wish I would have checked this page before I went to buy some tropical fish. We bought 8 fish and less than 2 weeks later all have died, along with half the fish that had been perfectly healthy in our tank. I won't be coming here again or recommending it to anyone else Sarah March 6th 2009 Report this review Rating:1 This store is terrible, I first bought my tank fully populated over 10 years ago and never lost a fish in 2 years, I bought 4 fish (can't remember what they were) and within a few days I was loosing fish at a rate of 3-4 a day. I went into the store for advise and explained the tank was running fine until i introduced the fish i had bought from them and they just said maybe its your water, I was not happy with the answer so I asked to speak to someone who knew what they were talking about and another young lad came to me 10 minutes later and said, he didn`t know what the problem could be but it won`t be the fish from here there quarantined and checked as he said this I brought his attention to a tank behind him that had several dead fish in it but he basically wasn`t interested and just said bring a sample of your water in and if its ok well give you some fish to compensate for your loses, so basically that meant oh well all your healthy fish are doomed and we will give you more to make the problem worse, as you can guess I have never purchased from there since, I called in once while in Bolton thinking they may have improved but was shocked at their tanks, they had dead or dying fish in nearly every tank, their fighter tanks looked terrible and the fish were clearly unwell. my advise is avoid this place like the plague other wise you may just introduce a plague to your tank. ShaGGy November 25th 2007 Report this review Rating:1 I remember when it was Dave's aquarium and the Marine fish were superb. We used to go and stand in awe at the stuff. Now there is little choice and even then it's of poor quality, dying or wrongly named. It's critical with Marine fish that they are compatible but they are too quick to sell one even if it is incompatible with the rest of your fish. turin November 14th 2007 Report this review Rating:1 ALL THE ANIMALS ARE KEPT IN VERY POOR CONDITIONS AND DYING MOST OF WHAT IS WRITTEN ON THE TANKS DONT MATCH UP WITH WHAT IS IN THE TANKS AND YOU HAVE TO WONDER ROUND FOR AGES TO FIND A MEMBER OF STAFF THEN THEY TELL YOU THAT THERE WITH ANOTHER CUSTOMER AND YOU HAVE TO STAND AROUND WAITING FOR THEM AND THEY HAVE CLEARY FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOU AS WHEN YOU YET AGAIN GO TO FIND THEM THERE IN THE STAFF OFFICE BIT TALKING TO EACH OTHER.THIS SHOP IS ONLY GOOD FOR FISHERMEN AND SHOULD HAVE THE LIVE SECTION CLOSED DOWN BY THE RSPCA. How sad I was to return and see the state it's now in. The fish stock is undeniably huge (they supply many smaller shops in the NW) but the building is dark and shabby. To be fair the guy in charge of the fish section new his stuff and was helpful, but it took ages to find him and the equipment section is terrible - lots of flourescent castles and skulls. David Johnson March 29th 2007 Report this review Rating:4 The live fish section is very understaffed and its almost impossible to get a member of staff to help on a Sat when its busy. The siamese fighting fish section is particulary appauling. Diane March 23rd 2007 Report this review Rating:1 I agree totally, i have visited this shop on a couple of occasions and its a total disgrace, this shop should be closed down until they all realise the standard care of animals, i saw two decomposed fish in the tanks on my last visit this weekend and it was obvious they had been dead a while, how they cannot notice this is beyond me, they wait for customers to tell them as they are to busy chatting amongst themselves and texting each other. They have no knowledge what so ever!!!!!!!!! I certainly wont be going back. Monica January 7th 2007 Report this review Rating:1 What utter rubbish, ive never heard so much rubbish in all my life, one in 5 tanks have a dead fish floating on the surface, the helpfull staff know nothing. Told my father swordtails would be ok with malawis?? and lobsters??. I was there with my father at the time, i have kept allsort of tropical fish from guppys to malawis, oscers to 2ft redtailed cats and i know what speices do not go together. We asked these questions to test the staff working there. I had no intention of letting my father buy any fish for my little nieces tank. The non fish lifestock looks so lethargic and ill it breaks my heart to see those poor animals living in the messy cages. When the shop was ran by Dave himself in Tottington Then it was 10/10. But now i would feel it does not even diserve a 1 star. I am still shocked how people shop there and give it such praise, there are far more better shops in the lancashire area which are much cleaner, helpfull and happy to give advice instead of urging to make a sale This reply may look like i had a feude with daves aquarium. This is not the case. I do shop there for the odd spare part if i cant find it anywhere else. i just wish they would get there act together and have a dam good shake up. The store could be the best in lancashire if they tidyed it up and employed proper staff with proper knowlage of fishkeeping instead of employing college students Ben Lovelock November 16th 2006 Report this review Rating:1 Fantastic shop, loads of tanks and stands. Urmston Aquatics & Reptile Centre Superb service, can't recommend enough. My mrs bought me a Biorb from there and after 4 weeks the bugger leaked like the Titanic... I rang Urmston Aquatics on Sunday and was told to try replacing the one way valve, did this but still leaked, rang Urmston Aquatics back on Monday morning and spoke to Claire, very helpful, I was told she would look into and ring me back, got a call back about 2 hrs later and was told Reef One ( Biorb maker ) would send me a new "shell". I explianed to Claire that the fish were currently in the bath and I was worried about them being in there any longer, she then told me they have a Biorb in the shop and I can have that one instead, "great" I said, I just needed to pack up the old one and upon reciept my new one would be sent out. Then they told me they have a van in the area and offered to drop me one off and collect my bust one, Tuesday morning new Biorb delivered at 11am and fish are now back happy. Sincere thanks for your help and like I say, would recommend you in a flash. Cheers Kenny March 23rd 2010 Report this review Rating:10 I visited this shop today and will not be returning. Nicola cookson June 19th 2011 Report this review Rating:9 I have bought fish from this LFS for years. I used to travel around on the show scene always visiting the LFS at the host venues. Alan, the owner will try to stock any fish for you if you ask him. I like the cellar aspect of the lower part of the shop - but wheelchair access is maybe an issue. Opening times could be improved. Overall, I always go back there, it's friendly & you are free to browse & chat without being rushed. It's not an intimidating shop like some of the newer Hi-tec/hi-spec shops, which doesn't mean run down either - the fish are healthy & the water is clear. Well worth a visit, just for the random oddities he sometimes gets in his shipments. Barry Appleby June 12th 2011 Report this review Rating:9 I thought you were open till 8.30 on Fridays I came at eight and you went open May 6th 2011 Report this review Rating:1 A wonderful little shop if you live in this area, they stock a good variety of 'bread and butter' species and on occasion some rarer and less commonly seen tropical fish, such as ember tetras (£1 each!) various killifish, a near constant suply of healthy German Rams (£4.50 each/£8pp). Their marine section is growing nicely now with a good variety of reef safe and larger fish and inverts. Not a particularly good selection of corals just now, but it's getting better. The plant selection is usually nicely varied with new stock coming in on a weekly basis. There only major down fall in my opinion is the coldwater section - lots of goldfish for sale but not great advice given, eg - no quesions about tank size/pond etc. But this is the same for many fish shops out there. In my experience of this shop, I have recieved some very helpful advice, and I trust them 95% of the time, however when I first set up a tropical tank I was told to not do a fishless cycle but use some neons instead...not wonderful advice but this was a few years back when it was still quite a new thing to do so I wouldn't let this put you off. I love this little fish shop and I'm very very glad it's my LFS. The small size may limmit the amount of tanks of sale fish, but it certainly doesn't limmit the quality of amount of fish available. The size also makes the shop more intimate without customers being stared at with an uncomfortble silence as in many other small shops....Well worth a few visits if you live in lancashire or are even just visiting the area. Definitely recommend them as the best fish shop in Manchester LG September 19th 2008 Report this review Rating:10 Oasis aquarium must have been going for at least 20 years, thats how long me and my husband have been shopping with them, a few of the comments i would disagree with but i have always found the staff to be very very helpful and Knowledgeable i think the shop just gets better and better but with that it does get very busy they recently opened the old pond room up as a mainly discus section and some rarer tropical fish like L number cats and dwarf ciclids. They have a good selection of malawi cichlids,a better than average tropical section and wait for it MARINE FISH AND INVERTEBRATES that are second to none we have kept everything that Oasis sells over the years and our latest of 5 aquariums is a 150 gallon fish and coral system supplied by Oasis which is now packed to the top and looks even better than there display aquarium :) they are near to completing there invertebrate section and are still going to add even more coral tanks then i believe they are going to rip out the fish system and replace all that as well (looks fine to us) all in all the owner Trever and his Manager Eddie have been excellent and by the way i dont think you can put a price on quality livestock ! but in saying that they were cheaper than other stores we visited who livestock wasnt as good of condition 10/10 A++++++++++ marie December 9th 2007 Report this review Rating:10 This shop is local to me and I have been there many times over the years but I have noticed a change from the enthusiastic aquarist to a profit driven shop, this is a pity as I gave always found in the past they will give you good advice and they took care of there stock, but on the last 2-3 visits I have found them to be less interested in the customer. The owner (forget his name) usually will chat to customers and give advice but on my last visit I approached him to say I was looking to restock my tank, but halfway through my sentence he turned round and said to one of the young lads can you serve this customer i thought this was a little rude but also thought he maybe busy and at least he has got one of his staff to help me, but the member of staff was generally unintrested I explained my situation that i had lost a lot of fish a few years ago due to buying diseased fish from Britains Aquatic Superstore in Bolton and have only had 5 fish in the tank since and was looking to restock it, i told him I was looking to spend up to £25 this visit on fish, but he didn`t seem interested in making any suggestions, When i asked about some fish most of the answers were we can`t sell them until weekend and every time i turned my head to look at another tank he started to head off as if he just didn`t want to help, so I walked upstairs bought £2 worth of accessories I wanted and will now visit The Fish World in Oldham as they have great reviews and their website is informative. Oasis if you read this please take note and don`t head they way Bolton did you have a great shop with a great reputation don't loose this, I have spoken to 2 breeders who both said the same thing so it is not just me being narky. Don`t be put of by this review I generally find the shop great but do show reservations due to my last experience (the shop was empty there were 3 staff upstairs and 2 staff plus the owner downstairs where the tanks are). | Pier Aquatics Great George St Wigan Lancashire WN3 4DL Tel: 01942 236661 Although Pier is a wonderful shop, with a HUGE selection of healthy and rare fish, they do have some faults - as already mentioned, they keep the bettas in tiny containers - not even small tanks, but containers with no filtration. This is something I would not expect from such a well regarded and profecsional fish shop. They do over price quite a lot of the more common fish which seems odd when they have reasonable prices for the rarer fish? Tracey April 20th 2011 Report this review Rating:1 I love Pier Aquatics. I take the train down all the time - they have great quality fish at great prices. They have great advice both in the shop and online. I wouldn't shop anywhere else, even if its a 4-6 hour round trip from where I live! CoryLover May 3rd 2010 Report this review Rating:10 Pier aquatics is a great shop. Good selection of fish, including things you won't see in your average shop. Helpful, friendly staff. Great prices. Went on the advice of a friend, and was not disappointed. Always our first choice when fish shopping, even though it is a 200 mile round trip!!! Sean Sean April 30th 2010 Report this review Rating:10 Excellent fish. Excellent service. Excellent prices. It has to be one of the top 5 shops in the country. I think that these 'disgruntled' customers were probably told their Bi-Orb wasnt big enough for a pair of Oscars. Matthew Faulkner April 30th 2010 Report this review Rating:10 I choose to travel 50 miles to get to Pier and use this as my "local" I find the service just out of this world and since ashopping there have seen more new species than I have in the last 15 years! The staff are spot on although one does make a poor cup of tea ! The fault with Pier ermmmm apart from not being local there is none! Jamie Horne April 29th 2010 Report this review Rating:10 I agree with jamie I find a few of the cooments quite bizzare....as if any of the staff there would advise to wait until Whitespot spots fell off?? I don't think the negative comments were from people who knew that much about fish...particularly where they came from, how they live in the wild, how hard they are to obtain etc etc. I also choose to travel 40 odd miles to get my fish from Pier as: 1. they are healthy, good conditioned fish 2. They are extremely well priced 3. The knowledge supplied with the fish is top drawer 4. I just cannot get the species of fish from anywhere else I have always found the staff to be cheery and smiley....and they make a top brew In fact I am going across on Monday...so hope you are open...lol Halifax Stu Stuart Fleming April 29th 2010 Report this review Rating:1 I agree with jamie I find a few of the cooments quite bizzare....as if any of the staff there would advise to wait until Whitespot spots fell off?? The staff really know thier stuff and the selection of fish is superb there is always something new to see here . They could have been unhelpful with me as the fish were not from them but they sorted out my tank and now it is disease free Suzy April 28th 2010 Report this review Rating:9 Nice selection of fish but thats it. If you have heard half the stuff i have about Pier Aquatics you'd never shop there. Oh, dont get me wrong they're great if you know what your doing and you've not got a problem with them but just you try to your money back off them when your fish die. First of all they test customers aquarium water with test strips, which for a professional aquatics store is an absolute DISGRACE! Test strips are not accurate and a mix test strip doesnt even test for ammonia, the biggest killer of fish! They sell too many fish for new tanks, inappropriate and non compatable fish, (their favourite at the moment seems to be silver sharks, which grow to 12 inches, for 20 litre tanks!) and either give no advice or bad advice! The worst one was when i had someone asked me if the advice they'd received from Pier was correct...she asked them how to get rid of the white spot that had developed on some fish that she had bought from THEIR store and was told to wait til the spots fall off, then scoop them out with a net. Thats is not just bad advice, thats purposely giving someone incorrect advice. Altogether, lets just say they dont care about you, they dont care about your fish, they dont care about their fish, they just care about how much money you spend there! Close Pier Down! April 26th 2010 Report this review Rating:1 Not good, staff are unhelpful and have no manners, most of the marine fish are kept in small holding tanks. Dont buy from here martin March 7th 2010 Report this review Rating:1 I recently visited this shop and was really impressed with the vast selection of fish they stock. I was there to purchase a siamese fighter and was quite surprised to find them lying in shallow dirty water in plastic pint glasses - the type you would expect to see in a beer tent! The assistant poured the fish into a net, discarding the water from the glass and then placed the fish in a bag of water she'd taken from another tank - so, by the time my fish arrived at his new home, he'd been in 3 different waters in the space of a day. He's suffering for it now - doing all i can to keep him going. he's also got anchor worm - when i called the shop for advice, I was recommended treatments to buy ! ! Would never shop there again. disappointing :( adele October 29th 2009 Report this review Rating:1 the staff were very good, thy gave me good advice and made you feel welcome.thy spent loads of time explaining the to do and not to do with fish keeping. The shop is newly fitted out and is very good to visit.thanks again to the staff. ken August 29th 2008 Report this review Rating:9 Excellent shop visited many times - staff always helpful. This is still one of the best fish stores I have ever been to for the widest range of diff fish. Its also in the Top 20 of PFK aquatic shops - so folks dont be put off by other older reviews - this shop is one of the best ******* Bristlenose lover March 6th 2008 Report this review Rating:10 we visited and found it to be a clean andinteresting shop with some unusual fish.if i lived nearer i,d be in every week. keith myers August 10th 2007 Report this review Rating:8 I've not visited the shop but made a call to enquire about stock lists. The (middle aged?) lady I spoke to was surly and unhelpful. I won't bother visiting. David Johnson March 22nd 2007 Report this review No rating for this comment? Why I totally disagree. I have shopped at Pier for years and have never known their standards to be anything but high. They are very knowledgable and helpful. Every purchase that I have made, whether live shock or equipment has lasted. The owner and staff are dedicated to the hooby. Mike Brooks February 17th 2007 Report this review No rating for this comment? Why I agree. This place is really not very nice. I have visited on many occasions and there are always dead or ill fish in the display tanks. The fighters are kept in tiny boxes no more than 2x2 inches and they are filthy. I will not go here again - it is a display of cruelty. Fish Friend September 20th 2006 Report this review Rating:1 untrained "studant" quality staff. sorry to any real studants but you get the idea. The condition of the fighting fish is appalling. Even pets at home have them in a proper tanks. Don't expect my purcheses to be chased round a tank before being caught by hand..... hope the current renovations extend to properlt trained staff ans better quality livestock. C.M.C Aquatics I agree, excelent and knowlegable staff. willing to take larger unmanageable fish that outgrew my current tank. Colin Wilcock August 16th 2006 Report this review Rating:10 Very helpful and knowledgeable - staff helped with my pond problem even though equipment was not bought from them.
