The criticism is totally unwarranted. I can remember going in there with my Dad when I was a young boy (25+ years ago), and both my father and I still shop there at times. One could argue the aesthetics are not that of a more modern chain store but that has nothing to do with the friendliness or knowledge of the staff nor the health and welling of the fish and reptiles.  Chris May 11th 2011 Report this review

This shop used to be ok but over recent years it has become somewhere to avoid where spending your money is concerned. Manager, although knowledgable, is ignorant and rude and lacks customer relation skills. Spent a great deal of money in that shop until I got substantially ripped off and will never enter the premises again. Staff are friendly enough but the manager/owner is a *****  linda greenford March 14th 2011 Report this review

I think someone must have a personal vendetta with the shop proprietor, i visited the store for the first time yesterday to buy a replacement heat lamp for my vivarium, i didn't see anything wrong with any of the vivs or tanks, the only thing i noticed that could be rectified is the floor space and floorcovering! As for the smell, to me it smelt like ALL pet shops! It can't be that bad anyway because i purchased a cosby gourami whilst i was there and all the fish in the tanks seemed healthy, happy, and active, there were no dead fish to be seen, unlike a lot of aquatics you can visit!  Reply to unwarranted, ridiculous criticism about Walkers Aquatics, Bilston. More and more of our customers are mentioning this site, asking if someone is trying to close us down (ie. animal rights groups, or relatives of some of our competition). I say some because most of our competitors we have known for 30 years and we do recommend one another to customers if we cannot help. To say all our stock is diseased is total fabrication. Occasionally we take in found or unwanted reptiles that are in poor state with the sole purpose of bringing them back to good health, like Tyson, our Green Iguana which was found over 3 years ago in a very poor condition, almost dead. I would like to point out that we are checked frequently by Wolverhampton council, vets and the RSPCA, we have to have a pets licence to trade which is renewed yearly by the above! In fact Wolverhampton council always compliment us on the condition of our animals and fish, and recommend the way we operate to other shops. Finally most of my staff are trained at colleges in animal, reptile and fish care over a 2 year period, to call them and myself idiots is ridiculous and uncalled for. If these faceless, unnamed, so called animal lovers are so concerned why did they not approach me when they supposedly visited my shop as I am here 70 to 80 hours a week making sure my animals, reptiles, fish, staff and customers are happy!  Geoff Walker, Owner.  I think these reviews are very very unfair! I have known the shop and its owners for years, and they have 30 years experience! Have any of these people actually brought animals or fish from here? Well i have and have had no problems what so ever, the shop is pleasent and the the quality of live stock is second to none! I have a feeling some one has a personal problem here!  Tony November 10th 2009 Report this review

This is oly a small shp with basic fish, located near kalama zoo on a road leading from northfeild to longbridge, the owner is freindly, it used to be quite cheap but got a bit pricey later in comparacing to other aquatic shops in the area, from time to time i have seen some rather ill looking fish their. This is mny Dads local shop and a lot of the fish he has in his tank (betta splenden, tetras and mollys) are from this place. A good selection of common tropical and cold water fish for the size of the shop!  Dan Pepall August 29th 2006 Report this review

Visited this aquatics today and there were numerous dead fish in the tanks, and a large number of diseased fish, with both fungus and white spot, the water quality in the tanks both inside and outside was really poor, you could clearly see the fish were distressed and suffering, the disease had progressed, and in some cases over 65% of the fish was covered in the fungus. I understand you get problems with fish, but this can be treated and dealt with before it progreses, this was pure neglect. I bought some fish food and this was 2 years out of date. If you are looking for healthy fish then i would avoid this aquatics there are so many good ones to choose from!!!  Alan Diamond October 17th 2011 Report this review

Brought a red tail catfish from here on a Wednesday & by Saturday night it was dead.. I suppose it was my own fault because when I popped in on the Monday I noticed a red tail dead amongst the one I selected to buy on the Wednesday. I'm rating it a 3 because I also purchased some other fish (cats) which are doing well.. Did also notice quite a few dead fish in this aquatic shop also in several other tanks, so please be cautious when buying from here.  Mr C June 6th 2011 Report this review

I have been using this shop for the last five years. I bought a new fish a few weeks ago and introduced it to my aquarium. I immediately spotted ich and returned the fish. The next day the rest of my fish started to suffer with ich and finrot. I took them back to the shop where they died. I was NOT offered any apology or any fish to compensate, just a shoulder shrug. I had my fish about five years and still am really angry to the extent I cannot enter the shop as I feel my temper will explode. Used to be ok but things seem to have slipped recently.  I've been there a few times and I find that they're not really interested in you or your fish tank, they just want to flog fish. There always seems to be a slight sneer in their eyes and when you ask for other products it's dumped unceremoniously onto the counter and tilled up right away. The fish, however, seem to be in a reasonable condition, unlike the abomination that is Maidenhead Aquatics in Shirley.  Marie April 8th 2010 Report this review

quite a small shop, stocking common easy to keep species of fish, the prices are fairly competative and the owner is very helpful, if there is a fish they dont stock they will be happy to try and get it in for you, if they dont know the fish you are looking for give them the lattin name they will look into it for you, it used to be better, in my opinion before the lay out was changed and the owners changed over it was better, the 1st owner used to stock some great male siamese fighters in all different colours for 3.00, and had lots of rare kili fish and ciclids with the best prices in town, the new owner doesnt stock ass much in the way of rare colourful fish and the prices are not as good, they did stock some beautiful figure 8 and spotted fuffers for a while but rarely do now, i would have give this place 9 out of 10- 5 or 6 years ago but it is fairly basic these days, offering the same seletion as any other aquatic shop though it is still a bit cheper than most so better than average for that aspect, the newer owner was looking to stock marine fish and set up a special room for it a few years ago, but this idea never happend which was a bit of a let down as i'm sure i would go their all the time if it had!(he now uses the room for cold water fish)  Dan Pepall August 29th 2006 Report this review

this store is bad if you buy an aquarium from them, even if they know the aquarium is faulty they state they are not responsible for faulty goods and blame their supplier, lights not sealed in dangerous condition, heaters that started to smoke when in use, ,most electrics bought from this store were dangerous and faulty, simon the owner refuses to do the right thing i have now taken him to court, its a pity as they could be a great store if they thought of the customer first, but as soon as you have paid they are not intrested, someone who could look after the customer would have 1 of the best stores in birmingham , but the way it is run is shortsighted and wastes opportunity that would benefit everyone.  andrew mclaren March 21st 2010 Report this review

Proud owner of 2 terrapins and the one chewed out the neck of the other a few weeks back, now in sep tanks but the guys at Angel even stayed open past closing on a Friday for me to rush out to get another tank heater for spare tank so I could save the victim. 3 weeks on and he's making full recovery with neck healed thanks to Angel. Cheers guys, legends!  Mark December 26th 2008 Report this review

I have been using Angel since I started keeping fish around 18 months ago. I have always found the help & advice provided by the former owner (Dave) to be very helpful. Stock is always good quality & the prices have got to be the best in Birmingham. Since the new owners have taken over, the shop has been tidied up, all tanks are fully stocked & the place generally looks more inviting. The range of stock that they have is excellent for such a small. The guys will try to get you anything you like & price wise they cannot be beaten. I whole heartedly recommend this shop to anyone.  Steve J September 15th 2008 Report this review

You may be put off going in to this shop at first, as from the outside it doesn't look much to talk about, but you would be making a mistake to ignore it. The shop may be small, but it often has a varied and unusual selection of both fish and corals for sale. Stock can be a bit sporadic, and it's is best to phone for latest delivery times. As far as advice is concerned, it's the best I've had since i started the reef keeping hobby, due not insignificantly to the fact that the shop is a real enthusiast's haunt, and you often get a good debate going. Prices, as you may have gathered from other posts are very reasonable, and good quality frags are sometimes available, bought in buy other hobbyist's. On a final note, EVERYTHING that I have bought from this shop is alive and healthy to this day.  Ian Green January 12th 2008 Report this review

Decent sized aquatics section situated at the back of the store with a selection of tropical, marine and cold water fish. Stocks the common basic fish tetras, guppies, swordtails ect You will not find many cichlids at this store and no Malawi or Tangs have been stocked for several years. Discus are occasionally stocked but are very small and way over priced. Tropical fish are generally healthy but some do look a little sickly. The marine section does appear to be of decent quality. Staff knowledge is very much hit and miss, some staff members have decent knowledge while others will give appalling advice. The store also has a decent small animal room.  AR May 4th 2010 Report this review

Visited here several times. Good selection of fish, including hard to find varieties. However the cold water fish have always looked unhealthy to me and some of the tropical fish tanks are far too overcrowded. Sadly ALL BUT ONE of the fish I have bought from there has died in a very short period of time, my most recent purchase was 3 silver dollars - 2 died in 24hrs. My advice - AVOID the livestock, but it is a great place to buy food and tank accessories at competitive prices.  Izzy May 22nd 2011 Report this review

Have spent loads of cash here recently having set up a marine environment. Staff are generally very helpful, however the kids selling the fish, know pretty much nothing about anything, so be very careful.Fish never look in great condition and personally I would not buy from them. Stock of corals, however is impressive, but virtually every time I have enquired about purchasing one it is "reserved". This practice really annoys me. If an item is reserved, then take it out of view- keep it in a tank out the back, it's really frustrating. There is a great young female member of staff who is knowledgable about corals- seek her out she is the only one who knows anything!  Dawn Rowley December 28th 2009 Report this review

Been to this store on a few occasions they have a good amount of stock of accessories and water treatments and the staff are helpful. However I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy any fish from here on more than one occasion there were dead fish in the tanks and when telling the staff they were neither supprised or bothered (they did take them out of the tank). Each fish the son purchased for his own tank either died or were attacking the other fish. There were also a lot of fish attacking the other fishes in the tanks in store and on one occasion there was a black gold fish pracically dead at the top of the water due to the others attacking it again when telling staff they were neither supprised or bothered. Two of the fish that the son purchased ended up being put into our tank and having almost 40 babies.  Sandra March 10th 2009 Report this review

I'm not sure what has happened to Shirley aquatics but in my view I will never go there again, to give people my experience rather just general moan these are my issues with the shop, travelled 35 mile to pick up a Newave power head that was advertised on there web site but when I got there was told they are out of stock! Ok no big issue I'll buy another make only to be shown 2 Koralia power heads in old and battered boxes and very expensive, the young lad who first dealt with me was very friendly but didn't have a clue, the manager didn't seem that bothered either, the marine/aquatics centre just looks run down and very shabby, allot of the stock on the shelves looks dirty and grubby and the choice of products was very disappointing , Shirley aquatics was a place that you paid a little more but you had good selection of fish and top quality products , now it looks like a run down shop in trouble , it's a shame because I use to enjoy my drive out even if I wasn't after anything , last time I'll make that visit again but I do hope one day they get it back to the shop that was once respected in the aquatics world !! Summary : lack of fish/products and shabby run down shop.  Harvey Stewart September 6th 2011 Report this review

25 years ago Shirley Aquatics was a place to behold, today however its just a shadow of its former self. Fish are good but everything else has seen and passed its use by date. Everything looks untidy and worn out. I wanted a book on the naturally planted aquarium, they had 6 every one with water damage and mould growing on them. None were reduced either still selling for their £29 rrp. The whole place needs pulling down and rebuilding. On a positive note its good to see John Cook back in store, so maybe there is hope. On a negative note, I bought 2 percula clowns. Both died overnight. Took them back the following day to find their stock had been completeley wiped out. But it was not "their problem".  The Pom November 5th 2010 Report this review

As a previous employee several years back, I was amazed at how downhill Shirley Aquatics has gone in these years. When I was there workers were proud to uphold the strong reputation the shop had not only in the area, but nationwide. It was very well maintained with excellent supplies and service - and the slightly higher price you paid justified this. The past couple of times I have been, however, I have frankly been shocked at the current situation. The fish are no where near as well stocked, well priced, or in as good health. The staff (certainly the one's I was served by) have been rude, snappy and generally unwilling to help. Needless to say I have changed my supplier and am very unlikely to return. No wonder they are apparently in financial difficulty - not recommended!   September 24th 2010 Report this review

Terrible customer service. I bought 2 clowns which were extremely chewed up. Since i have bad eye-sight and couldn't get closer to the tanks due to barriers i couldn't see it. Took both back and asked for an exchange. They requested some of my water for testing. I got two samples, one to my LFS and one to Shirley's. My LFS reported perfect water, Shirley's reported 2ppm ammonia and tried to refuse an exchange. They finally accepted and said i could have it, 'this time'. I came back a few days later and asked a gentleman cleaning a tank. He was obviously frustrated i'd interrupted his gravel cleaning and snapped at me. I explained my situation and it got worse and worse. He said the person that delt with me wasn't there, i'd have to come back another day. Keep in mine it's a 45 minute drive each way for me so i go out there sparingly. After arguing this point he said he didn't know where my reserved fish were. I explained they were two coral percs and there were atleast 20+ in their tanks and he still wasn't satisfied. After handing me to his co-worker because he couldn't deal with me anymore i was handed two coral percs and dropped off at the till. I said thanks and was promptly ignored as he stomped off. I just wish people realized what damage they can do just by being rude, but then again as the old saying goes, "Pay peanuts, you get monkeys"  Thomas September 21st 2010 Report this review

The store has a barrier in front of all tanks which is very annoying and makes viewing less pleasurable and some what difficult. Fish generally appear to be healthy and I personally have not had a problem with live stock from Shirley but know of other people who have. Advice from staff is sales driven in my opinion and it is worth doing your own research rather than relying on in store advice.  AR May 4th 2010 Report this review

A member of their staff informed me that all aquatic plants including foreground plants such as gloss and HC grow upwards. In order to achieve a carpet look they have to be cut to the floor level. They also stated that glosso is an easy undemanding plant, this couldn't be any further from the truth and is complete rubbish.  We began with a reasonalbe size marine tank a few months ago. At first we were pleased with the friendly service but recent purchases have died despite excellent water quality. We have been recommended corals and inverts that on further research have been classified as incredibly difficult to keep (blue linckia) or should not be kept together. They were excellent when we bought the tank but rude and inapproachable since. This weekend we were served by a lad Scott who did not know any of the species and when an experienced worked Paul cane to help, he just dismissed any of our questions and was very abrupt.  Whomever decided on the most recent business model for this outlet has got it seriously wrong this time around. Having been in the aquarium hobby (fresh and now marine) for some 10 years, I know a lot of people who used to use the shop frequently, if not solely for their aquarium needs, these people do not use the shop now, as it has gone from a hobbyist's shop, to a mercenary commercial business, seemingly trading for only new customers. The barriers, I presume, are to keep the riff-raff from banging on the glass, but do stop the serious hobbyist from getting a closer look at a potential purchase. On the plus side, if I cannot get the hardware that i require from my local aquarium shop, I always come here, as they do stock an impressive range of equipment for tanks.  Ian Green June 1st 2008 Report this review

I don't understand this place. They recently added a Reptile section at the back of the shop and I was unhappily stunned at what I saw. A square tank say 1.5m-0.75m with about 1000 yellow bellied slider turtles in it. I asked the sales staff how he managed to make sure the all get fed the required food. (for mollys maybe but if you want the fish to grow big and strong i suggest my way is best for any one that is reading this)I was also told incorrect information on compatability of fish-though i was advised by one of the guys in shirley it was safe to keep red eye puffer fish wih scats and gobbies- i would not advise this to any one-red eye puffers or red aie puffers as i know call them, are cute and beatiful but should be kept "ALONE" i found 3 dead fish in my tank the day after putting it in and took it out when i saw it bite the stomach out of one of my gobbies which also died as a result- i still have the red eye puffer but she lives in an orb in my kitchen now on her own, on a plus side the selection and general stock here is magnificent, though very expencive!, especialy some of the marine fish, ouch!  Dan Pepall August 29th 2006 Report this review

Nice reviews. I would'nt listen to these self-minded arseholes. Shirley Aquatics is a quality shop and stock quality and healthy fish. The fish are NOT caked in whitespot, if your fish die, its because your too stupid to know how to look after fish upon stocking. Trying pulling your head out your arse and listening to the advice given when purchasing the fish. FULLY RECOMMENDED STORE A+++++++++  Sam Gibbs July 23rd 2006 Report this review

I have purchased 5 plecos at different times from Shirley aquatics and all were in exellent condition. Each time I got one I looked at it very closely for any signs of illness and is a good idea to dose your tank with white spot treatment when adding a new fish  Ian Boughey February 13th 2006 Report this review

If you are fed up going to sales orientated shops that sell you anything thats gets them commission, then you wont go far wrong visiting 'Henley Water Gardens'. They have loads of sales aquariums filled with HEALTHY, ACTIVE Tropical and coldwater fish. And i do hear they are conducting a survey, to see if there is enough interest in them setting up a marine dept. (If you keep marine let them know) They have a great pond fish section, all kept in outside conditions so the temperature will be the same as it is in your pond. And their Pond plant selection is the best for miles and miles. So if want a shop that offers good honest advice, pop along and take a look for yourself. And they have a safe secure e-commerse site if you cant get to visit.'www.HenleyWaterGardens.co.uk Tom.  Tom December 20th 2008 Report this review

This is a great shop. The owner is really helpful and has a great knowledge base. All in all you get a really personal service and advice taylored to you. I have had loads of help setting up my tank. Tropical and cold water fish are for sale as well as a huge selection of plants (mainly growing in the selling aquariums which are all properly planted.)There are many tanks and accessories for sale as well as an extensive pond display outside. Very much worth the pretty drive out to Henley!  Anya February 12th 2007 Report this review

Very small amount of fish to choose from and wanted £6.95 for a catfish that I got elsewhere for £2.95. Staff are helpful however the shop doesn't appear big enough for the amount of stock and the lighting in the store is very poor. Prices appear to be a little more expensive than elsewhere if you shop around. Parking is limited too.  sandra March 10th 2009 Report this review

Fish & coral selection has been depleted here the last two occasions I visited, shame because this was the place I first saw marine fish in all their glory, and decided it was the hobby for me. I would recommend this shop only for tank parts, and equipment, if it is coral or livestock you are after, go elsewhere.  Ian Green June 1st 2008 Report this review

The prices are cheap , and they have a nice selection of Marine and unusal tropicals (including chiclids). some good catfish, chocolate goruami, and colourful guppies. The staff are appauling though, I have been there twice (both times at the weekend). They don't seem to know or care about fish or the wellfare, the bag i got my fish in was filled from a tap, and put in a bucket on the floor, the fish was then dropped in from a height of about 4ft before the bag was sealed up with no air in it! luckily the fish is fine now.  Jeffrey October 14th 2007 Report this review
